The Event

As part of Global Goals Week, the Skoll Foundation and the United Nations Foundation are pleased to present We the Future: Accelerating Sustainable Development Solutions on September 21, 2017 at TED Theater in New York.
The Sustainable Development Goals, created in partnership with individuals around the world and adopted by world leaders at the United Nations, present a bold vision for the future: a world without poverty or hunger, in which all people have access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity, and where thriving ecosystems are protected. The 17 goals are integrated and interdependent, spanning economic, social, and environmental imperatives.
Incremental change will not manifest this new world by 2030. Such a shift requires deep, systemic change. As global leaders gather for the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in September, this is the moment to come together to share models that are transforming the way we approach the goals and equipping local and global leaders across sectors to accelerate achievement of the SDGs.

Together with innovators from around the globe, we will showcase and discuss bold models of systemic change that have been proven and applied on a local, regional, and global scale. A curated audience of social entrepreneurs, corporate pioneers, government innovators, artistic geniuses, and others will explore how we can learn from, strengthen, and scale the approaches that are working to create a world of sustainable peace and prosperity.

Finally, there’s battery life, one of the more important measures of a laptop. Note: When you purchase something after clicking links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. He works in a catful home office in Bradenton, Florida. Cinebench appears in two versions, each rendering a scene using Maxon’s rendering engine. I did notice a slight fan whine while it was running, which can kick in—though very quietly—even during mundane, innocuous tasks such as typing this sentence. Keyboard layout not up to ThinkPad standards. There’s enough battery life to last ThinkPad 13s users a full days’s worth of computing. PCMark 8’s scores in both the Work and Creative tests establish the central thesis of the ThinkBook 13s: merely average in terms of performance, but the low price makes it a good value. The ThinkBook 13s sports Lenovo’s classic keys, which have a slight rounding on the bottom. We accepted it, and tested the laptop using the April Update. Options include a Core i7-8565U chip and upgrades to 16GB of memory and 512GB of SSD storage. Apple MacBook Pro vs. Microsoft Surface Laptop 3: Which 13-Inch Premium Laptop Is Tops? A Lenovo Vantage program provides easy access to various system settings, though below it in the Start menu is something called LenovoUtility that didn't seem to do anything no matter how many times I clicked it. In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system conks out. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheeting, Web browsing, and videoconferencing. In addition to a catchy appearance, the gadget has many practical advantages. 82,000. The audio experience that the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s delivers is surprisingly good. A tech journalist since the TRS-80 and Apple II days, Grevstad specializes in lightweight laptops, mobile workstations, and productivity software. While PCMark attempts to simulate real-world tests, the Cinebench test is synthesized. It's not dazzling, but it's a sufficient panel even when turned down one or two notches to save battery power. https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/lenovo-thinkbook-13s. Decent screen. We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Notebook buyers will have to step a bit gingerly though the logjam of not one but three competing Core processors, all shipping this holiday season and all competing for your dollars: Intel’s two 10th-gen Core chips, code-named Ice Lake and Comet Lake, will be selling alongside the more established (and still worthy) Whiskey Lake 8th-gen chips. Officially, it’s made of aluminum and magnesium metal and sports a Mineral Grey finish, with a zinc-alloy hinge. A fingerprint reader hides under the power button. August 24, 2019 Lenovo has just launched in the Philippines their latest business notebook that features a premium build, slim bezels, a fingerprint scanner, and a 5-segment hinge – the ThinkBook 13S . While it’s not a 2-in-1, the attractive IPS display folds back flat. It is undoubtedly more modern in appearance, with a sleek silver aluminium chassis sporting smooth lines … The laptop's left edge holds an HDMI video output and USB 3.1 Type-C port, along with an audio jack and the socket for the AC adapter. The Lenovo placed in the middle of the pack here. The 720p webcam isn't a face recognition camera, but you can still use Windows Hello to skip passwords thanks to the power button doubling as a fingerprint reader. The result is also a proprietary numeric score; again, higher numbers are better. Top scores go to the HP Spectre 360 x15, at 4,691—a pricey, top-end consumer laptop. ...while a more complex arrangement of USB-C and a HDMI port is mounted on the left. 80,00 with added taxes. Also note the user-serviceable screws. Affordable. Lenovo can’t quite get away from the usual mix of Windows bloatware and third-party apps. As for that webcam—well, even though there’s a keyboard button to turn it off, Lenovo goes the extra mile. You can opt between Core i5 or i7 processors, various amounts of storage and memory, as well as an optional Radeon 540X dedicated graphics. Black Friday deals: see all the best offers right now! The hinge has been tested for up to 25,000 open-close cycles, Lenovo says—about 8 times per day for 8 years. (Prices on the base models have fallen to $999, as the 7th-Gen models have begun to ship.) The ThinkBook 13s loaned to me for testing—$792 is the price from one online seller a Lenovo rep cited, though I found it for $764 at another—features a 1.6GHz Core i5-8265U "Whiskey Lake" processor with Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB PCIe solid-state drive, a full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) non-touch screen, and Windows 10 Pro. It’s worth noting that while the ThinkBook 13s shipped with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update installed, Microsoft almost immediately pushed the April 2019 Update (version 1903) to the laptop as part of its daily updates. The ThinkBook 13s features 13-inch FHD display with thin bezels, an 8th Intel Gen Intel CPU, a backlit keyboard, fast-charging, a physical privacy shutter, a fingerprint sensor that’s built into the power button and support for quick & secure biometric logins via … Business and consumer users alike will appreciate its detailed explanations and controls. Lenovo’s ThinkBook 13s is a deliberately intriguing combination of a business notebook with consumer flourishes, aimed at the vaguely-defined space between a home business and a more traditional consumer PC. The difference between the two tests (R15 and R20) depends on the complexity of the scene, with the R20 test being the more difficult of the two. It won't gobble huge datasets or perform workstation-style 3D rendering, but it won't keep you waiting for everyday tasks. There have been ThinkPads aimed at small and medium businesses (SMBs) before, but now Lenovo has given those companies their own brand: the ThinkBook. Though the differential between the top and bottom laptops under this 3DMark 3D performance evaluation is relatively tight, the ThinkBook 13s still falls well down the ranks. Recently, Lenovo has added another model under its ThinkBook business-class laptops. Aside from the ports – full-size HDMI, USB-C (for data transfer not power supply, at least for the moment), plus a couple of USB-A – we know very little. Lenovo tweaks its business notebook PC platform with consumer-friendly touches, such as a robust audio experience. (At press time, we didn’t have any to test.). It may not be the only notebook with a dual-screen design, but it is indeed the only that lets you use the secondary screen without lifting the display lid. Lenovo’s ThinkBook 13s manages to exude an aura of stability while still not breaking your back. Our review unit is a base-level configuration, excellent for daily use, but not that well suited for more demanding loads that could ben… The backlit keyboard copies one good idea from HP laptops—Skype keys for placing and canceling video calls. In this case, it's rendered in the company's eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark, for a second opinion on the machine's graphical prowess. (To test, we take a 4K movie and loop it over and over until the battery expires.) Sliding your fingernail along the edge of the top bezel moves the ThinkShutter, which blocks the webcam lens if you're concerned about online snoops. I am getting neck pain bending over the small screen, so will have to connect it to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse for better body mechanics. It largely succeeds. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. Lenovo includes a 73-watt charger using its own plug, rather than the increasingly common USB-C connector. Senior Editor, Though the performance is relatively average, being able to buy the ThinkBook 13s at an affordable price helps elevate it. A pair of USB Type A ports adorns the right side of the chassis.... A generous vent underneath the chassis helps pull air from the outside, venting it out through the back of the chassis via a small grille running along one half of the hinge's length. Lenovo tried to give a ThinkPad machine the "modern ultrabook" makeover, and the result is the updated Thinkbook. A tiny red dot visually signals when it’s blocked, though it’s so small, against the glare of the screen those of you with poorer vision may be unable to tell. We do, however, subtract points for the missing SD or microSD card slot. In fact, I’d argue the ThinkBook 13s sports one of the better laptop keyboards I’ve used. 3DMark measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. The abundance of metal in the case, minimal frames, slightly angular design - the laptop looks much more expensive than its price tag. Top-row function keys provide system controls such as brightness and volume, though F7, oddly, didn't toggle airplane mode despite its airplane icon. All five laptops' solid-state drives easily handled PCMark 8's storage subtest. Many of the notebooks we test are consumer PCs, some with high price tags attached. Lenovo ThinkBook 13s in-depth review Imagine what would happen if you took a 13-inch ThinkPad and crossbreed it with a fancy Ideapad like the 730S. Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. So far, so uninspiring, but where the ThinkBook really starts to come into its own is the performance. The Best Laptops for College Students in 2020. The ThinkBook surpassed the 14-hour mark, which wasn't enough to win but is more than enough to get you through a workday plus an evening of Netflix or a long flight plus a hotel-room work session. Our expert industry analysis and practical solutions help you make better buying decisions and get more from technology. Lenovo ThinkBook 13s review: Specs and performance. A practical number of ports split the difference between the consumer and business user. It has a slate gray color scheme that uses a lighter gray color on its anodized aluminum chassis, a darker gray on its keycaps, and shiny accents on the edges of the trackpad and a few ot… Lenovo doesn’t pack in any adapter dongles within the ThinkBook box. Lenovo ThinkBook 13s review: Performance The matte Full HD screen isn’t one of the platinum-grade, super-bright panels you can specify in the best ThinkPads, but it … It includes a combination of legacy USB-A and forward-looking USB-C ports, an excellent audio system, with decent battery life. PCMark 10 and 8 are holistic performance suites developed by the PC benchmark specialists at UL (formerly Futuremark). Interestingly, the ThinkBook 13s also has  dedicated calling keys for Skype. The top and side screen bezels are fashionably thin; there's no flex if you grasp the screen corners, though just a bit if you press the keyboard deck. MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air: Which 13-Inch Apple Laptop Is Best for 2020? The keyboard of the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s. We've said it a million times: Laptops with integrated graphics are best left to casual and browser-based games (and of course streaming video and music), as they simply can't play the latest 3D titles. The display of third-party trademarks and trade names on this site does not necessarily indicate any affiliation or the endorsement of PCMag. It also comes with a fingerprint scanner, pen support, latest 10th generation Intel … So pay attention: if the price is close to MSRP, look elsewhere. The results are proprietary scores. We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Viewing angles are broad, and contrast is good. On the other hand, the ThinkBook doesn't blow away the HP Envy 13 or Acer Swift 3; it merely joins them on your comparison shopping list. When the ThinkShutter is slide shut, a tiny red dot indicates that the webcam is physically unable to record you. Even the Envy's results are embarrassing compared to those of actual gaming laptops. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus is a one-of-its-kind notebook with dual displays – a 13.3-inch primary screen complemented by a secondary 10.8-inch e-Ink screen. It can handle minor photo touch-ups, though digital photographers will dislike its lack of an SD card. Sign up for What's New Now to get our top stories delivered to your inbox every morning. The ThinkBook’s downward-facing speakers deliver audio that you’ll actually want to listen to. Lenovo claims that the suggested retail price of the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s we tested is over $1,100, but we couldn’t find a single price suggesting it was over $1,000. It fares pretty well. Total luminosity is 301 nits maximum, close to but exceeding the 250-260 nits we consider appropriate for daily use. It might not be the one notebook with a dual-screen design, however it’s certainly the one that allows you to use the secondary screen with out lifting the show lid. The Lenovo ThinkBook 15-IML reviewed here comes with a price tag of Rs. Impressive battery life. For our performance tests, I pitted the ThinkBook 13s against four other 13.3-inch ultraportables. And at a price hovering between $700 to $800, you’re left with a pretty solid midrange laptop for general use. Lenovo ThinkBook Plus review: What’s new? All in all, the keyboard's not bad, but you won't mistake it for a world-class ThinkPad keyboard. The bold branding signals that this isn’t strictly a business laptop. Pay attention to where the ThinkBook 13s places—though its results are middling overall, its absolute scores aren’t bad. Lenovo ThinkBook 13s display There aren’t any bells and whistles attached to the 13.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 non-touch IPS screen on the ThinkBook 13s. Lenovo Flex 5G review ; The Lenovo ThinkBook 13s . Colors are easy on the eyes—they don't pop like poster paints, but they're well saturated and accurate. There’s a lot to like about Lenovo’s consumer-business hybrid, though. The ThinkBook 13s (also known as the ThinkBook 13s-IWL) sacrifices just a bit on the performance front for including an 8th-gen Whiskey Lake processor, but places it inside a sturdy chassis with a very good keyboard on top. Officially, the ThinkBook 13s is built to withstand dousing with up to 2 ounces of water, extreme temperatures, and vibrations. It’s probably worth considering picking up a deal on the older X1 Carbon generation as well as considering the new ThinkBooks. Packs HDMI, USB-C, and USB-A ports. There’s an enormous cluster of laptops which all use the UHD 620 chipset, which will be good for some basic, older games.
