The Event

As part of Global Goals Week, the Skoll Foundation and the United Nations Foundation are pleased to present We the Future: Accelerating Sustainable Development Solutions on September 21, 2017 at TED Theater in New York.
The Sustainable Development Goals, created in partnership with individuals around the world and adopted by world leaders at the United Nations, present a bold vision for the future: a world without poverty or hunger, in which all people have access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity, and where thriving ecosystems are protected. The 17 goals are integrated and interdependent, spanning economic, social, and environmental imperatives.
Incremental change will not manifest this new world by 2030. Such a shift requires deep, systemic change. As global leaders gather for the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in September, this is the moment to come together to share models that are transforming the way we approach the goals and equipping local and global leaders across sectors to accelerate achievement of the SDGs.

Together with innovators from around the globe, we will showcase and discuss bold models of systemic change that have been proven and applied on a local, regional, and global scale. A curated audience of social entrepreneurs, corporate pioneers, government innovators, artistic geniuses, and others will explore how we can learn from, strengthen, and scale the approaches that are working to create a world of sustainable peace and prosperity.

The ice extends about 100-250 feet under the water. For a truly exciting trip, the Ice Adventure tour can include a visit to the famous Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves if conditions are favorable. The area of … This trail is located across the lake from the Visitor Center. We then attached crampons to our boots and walked on top of the glacier. But there’s magic in the Mendenhall Ice Caves, where water runs over rocks and under frozen bright-blue ceilings inside a partially hollow glacier. We entered one of the ice caves and actually walked under the glacier (Amazing!). The lake is used for ice skating during the winter as it is covered with thick ice. The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the many glaciers flowing off of the majestic Juneau Ice Field—a dramatic, 1,500-square-mile expanse of glaciated ice and rugged mountain peaks located in the southeastern panhandle of Alaska. This was the first U.S. Forest Service visitor center built in the nation; it was designed by Linn A. Forrest and dedicated in 1962. The cavities are influenced by the very slow flow of the ice, which tends to collapse the caves again. Il ghiacciaio Mendenhall è un ghiacciaio situato nella valle Mendenhall, a circa 19 km dal centro di Juneau, capitale dell' Alaska, nella zona sud-orientale dello stato statunitense. The territorial governor at that time was the first governor to inhabit the mansion, and he held the first open house for citizens on January 1, 1913. This fee provides for maintenance of the facility, programs during summer, and updating exhibits in the center. Located a short 12 miles outside Alaska’s capital city of Juneau, the Mendenhall Ice Caves are ever-changing due to melting ice and glacier recession but an absolute wonder to explore. The Mendenhall ice caves have been described as “otherworldly” and “surreal,” but it is important to note that they are “melting” and “fleeting.” Exiting the cave, we came face to face with the glacier and were immediately struck with its massive size. That's true, the ice cave at Mendenhall no longer exists. Mendenhall Lake has its exclusive ecosystem, and famous spot for fishing. There is no fee for parking. Answer 1 of 25: Hi everyone! [8] In a joint article for the Juneau Empire Geologist Cathy Connor and Geophysicist Roman Motyka, both professors of the University of Alaska said "climatic warming coupled with ice loss through iceberg calving are the reasons the Mendenhall Glacier is retreating and shrinking. The retreat of glaciers since 1850 affects the availability of fresh water for irrigation and domestic use, mountain recreation, animals and plants that depend on glacier-melt, and, in the longer term, the level of the oceans. The lake is a result of the run-off from the glacier and is increasing in size as the glacier continues to retreat. In Wikipedia. [11][12], Although there are many negative effects of the recession of the Mendenhall Glacier and glaciers in general, there are also a few positive outcomes. I simply couldn’t wrap my head around the ethereal beauty of the caves! [6] The US Forest Service, which manages the Mendenhall Glacier, says "because glaciers are a product of climate, they respond to climate change. In Wikipedia. Because it needs a difficult journey and it involves a kayak ride or long hike, an ice climb. An ice cave is any type of natural cave (most commonly lava tubes or limestone caves) that contains significant amounts of perennial (year-round) ice.At least a portion of the cave must have a temperature below 0 °C (32 °F) all year round, and water must have traveled into the cave’s cold zone. It extends from the Juneau Icefield, its source, to Mendenhall Lake. The walls of the Mendenhall caves can be described as an enchanted and surreal place, a world of a thousand shades of blue with suggestive shapes which have been naturally carved out over the centuries by the water. A well-established visitor’s center is just 13 road miles from downtown Juneau, and it shouldn’t be missed. From May through September, a pass is required to view the exhibits and audio-visual presentations inside the center, and to use certain outside infrastructure, such as the Steep Creek trail, the Pavilion, the restrooms, and Photo Point trail. The Mendenhall Ice Caves are sure to amaze no matter what way you choose to see them. If you have a chance to take this tour, do it now. Despite the harsh terrain and the exhausting climb, once you arrive at the Mendenhall Ice Caves it will all be worth it. However, this interesting phenomenon will fade away if temperatures continue to climb, since the head of the glacier will no longer have cold enough ambient temperatures to cause snow to precipitate. Uno dei quali è il "Nugget Falls Trail" che conduce i visitatori alle cascate Nugget (circa 1,5 km di percorso).
