The Event

As part of Global Goals Week, the Skoll Foundation and the United Nations Foundation are pleased to present We the Future: Accelerating Sustainable Development Solutions on September 21, 2017 at TED Theater in New York.
The Sustainable Development Goals, created in partnership with individuals around the world and adopted by world leaders at the United Nations, present a bold vision for the future: a world without poverty or hunger, in which all people have access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity, and where thriving ecosystems are protected. The 17 goals are integrated and interdependent, spanning economic, social, and environmental imperatives.
Incremental change will not manifest this new world by 2030. Such a shift requires deep, systemic change. As global leaders gather for the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in September, this is the moment to come together to share models that are transforming the way we approach the goals and equipping local and global leaders across sectors to accelerate achievement of the SDGs.

Together with innovators from around the globe, we will showcase and discuss bold models of systemic change that have been proven and applied on a local, regional, and global scale. A curated audience of social entrepreneurs, corporate pioneers, government innovators, artistic geniuses, and others will explore how we can learn from, strengthen, and scale the approaches that are working to create a world of sustainable peace and prosperity.

It is to forgive the unforgivable. One advantage of investigating interreligious exchange through the lens of ritual is that it permits attention to be paid to a range of extra-textual phenomena such as tone, gesture, pacing, costume, and locatedness, which are capable of adding nuance to, or even subverting, a textual tradition. Ever the magician, Derrida dazzles again in his slim treatise On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness.Part of the Thinking in Action series, providing clear and accessible pieces from major thinkers, the book contains two surprisingly lucid essays from a writer notorious for producing difficult prose. He writes (Derrida 2001, p. 32), ‘Forgiveness is not, it should not be, normal, normative, normalising. A negotiation between these dimensions of hospitality is ultimately required. Terrorism and 9/11 as founding event ignited a new stage of capitalism which Korstanje called “Thana-capitalism”. It is not my intention to deconstruct the call for papers, but I do wish to identify a couple of aporias that will provide an opening. Others might dispute over just what counts as the "contribution" of philosophy. Désolé, un problème s'est produit lors de l'enregistrement de vos préférences en matière de cookies. There are many who might be inclined to think that such an imperative would shackle philosophy to utilitarian concerns, and open it to being judged by just how much development has occurred under the influence of philosophy. With the ‘refugee crisis’ of 2015 acting as a threshold moment, the cases navigate a complex web of relationships amidst a fragmented debate about asylum, and varying national and local frameworks in Europe. In the Anglo-American philosophical tradition, the urge is to unpack an aporia, to de-puzzle it, if you will. In these two essays, he's primarily concerned with hospitality and forgiveness. This happened because of two main reasons. He graduated from the École Normal Supérieure in 1956. To paraphrase Jacques, ... For Derrida (2000), this tension between unconditional hospitality (an unachievable ideal) and conditional hospitality (limited by various laws and regulations) nests inherent contradiction to Kantian cosmopolitanism but at the same time it is productive: it can disrupt, challenge and open existing practices. Jacques Derrida, On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness – PhilPapers. It is therefore worth investigating whether Kierkegaard’s considerations are really able to overcome in any way contemporary disputes concerning this problem or enrich our thinking in this area. Seeking to disrupt such forms of liberal inclusion, I turn to a more expansive ethico-political inquiry concerned with hospitality. The main criticism will be that these ethics have fatal consequences with regard to the subject’s possibility of keeping a critical distance from the demands made either by the Other herself or in her name and that the ethically relevant Other is permanently fixed to the role of the victim. First, the question of whether philosophers should even have a contribution to "development in Africa" is by no means a settled question, although it might be taken for granted by some.
